Today, after breakfast, we must bid farewell to our friendly camp staff. Then, its time to transfer to the Katavi airstrip for departure by shared charter to Mahale Mountains.
We are met on arrival and transferred to our exclusive camp, Greystoke Mahale luxury camp.Check in, relax and get acquainted with our marvelous environment. Later in the afternoon, we proceed for Chimpanzee tracking in the forest. Observing the chimpanzees in their natural habitat, one cannot help but be touched by their natural grace and anthropomorphic features.
We wake up to the exhilarating sights and sounds of wild Africa. After a sizzling breakfast by our camp chef, we set out to explore the marvelous bird diversity of Katavi in the company of a professional bird watching guide.
We visit the various habitats of Katavi from the high plains grassland, which becomes swampy wetland during the rains, to the fringes of miombo woodland and scattered acacia. We see a considerable numbers of waterfowl including many pelicans. About 400 different species of birds have been noted in this region. Return to camp for lunch and a free afternoon to relax, enjoy the fresh ambiance of Katavi or simply update your journal. Meals and Overnight at Chada Katavi tented camp (B, L, D)
Day 2: Katavi National Park
Day 3: Katavi National Park
Isolated, untrammeled and seldom visited, Katavi is a true wilderness, providing the few intrepid souls who make it there with a thrilling taste of Africa as it must have been a century ago. During our exploratory morning and evening game drives in this Tanzania's third largest national park, we expect to catch a glimpse of the substantial but elusive populations of the localized eland, sable and roan antelopes, a myriad water birds on the flood plains and Tanzania's densest concentrations of hippo and crocodile. In the dry season, the flanking floodplains support game concentrations that defy belief.

After breakfast, it's another day of Chimpanzee tracking in the forest. The hikes takes you to the chimp's habitation areas are accessible and not strenuous, although being in good physical condition will ease the strain of walking through the jungle! Up close, observing the endangered primates is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The chimpanzee population of the park is estimated at about 1000 which can be seen, in groups of five and 30 at a time, in their natural habitat.
Today, we bid farewell to the awesome Mahale. After breakfast, transfer to Mahale airstrip for departure by shared charter flight to Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam. On arrival, we'll be met for assistance to connect with our onward international flight marking the end of a memorable sojourn (B)
Two more full days to explore Mahale. After trying to understand the chimps, spend a two lazy days kayaking on Lake Tanganyika, or sailing on a beautiful old dhow, snorkeling, swimming, fishing and drinking as the sun sets in the company of a great staff team, superb food and an idyllic location. Meals and overnight at Greystoke Mahale luxury camp (B, L, D)
racking chimps from Greystoke is very professional; you're always accompanied by one of the camp's expert guides and a scout from the park. Crucially, your guide is someone who knows all of these chimps individually, by name, and can explain their behavior with reference to what's happened to that particular chimp in the past.
This raises your whole experience beyond simply watching wildlife, and into the realm of watching individuals and their social conduct. This makes it, for us, one of the most riveting wildlife spectacles in Africa. Dinner and overnight at Greystoke Mahale luxury camp (B, L, D)
Days 6 and 7: Mahale Mountains
An estimated 4,000 elephants might converge on the area, together with several herds of 1,000-plus buffalo, while an abundance of giraffe, zebra, impala and reedbuck provide easy pickings for the numerous lion prides and spotted hyena clans whose territories converge on the floodplains. Katavi's most singular wildlife spectacle is provided by its hippos.
Up to 200 individuals might flop together in any riverine pool of sufficient depth. And as more hippos gather in one place, so does male rivalry heat up - bloody territorial fights are an everyday occurrence, with the vanquished male forced to lurk hapless on the open plains until it
gathers sufficient confidence to mount another challenge. All meals and overnight at Chada Katavi tented camp (B, L, D)
Other primates such as baboons and columbus monkeys can also be seen. Elephants, buffalo, bushpig, porcupine and other animals are found in the north;while to the south live various antelope species, lions and giraffe. Meals and overnight at Greystoke Mahale luxury camp (B, L, D)
